Please follow these instructions carefully.

1. Skim your textbook table of contents and chapter pages. Prepare brief notes to discuss in class one or two things that you find interesting or useful to know more about.

2. Read Chapter 1 carefully.
a. Mark “PK” in the margins for information that you already know (Prior Knowledge).
b. Mark “?” in the margins for information you do not understand.
c. Mark “NK” for new information about which you did not know (New Knowledge).
d. Take margin notes on your reaction to what you read. Do not summarize. Be thoughtful and apply your PK and develop your NK.
e. Write at least one thoughtful question per page. (You should probably have more than one question per page).
