I’ll tell you later what I got.

Btw, I went to the 150th anniversary celebration at Gettysburg last month, and they ran a citizenship swearing-in ceremony at the end of the event. Very cool and so moving. Justice Scalia presided.

The citizenship oath is very serious, and it is still tied to the concepts we used in class. I love the part where the new citizens are required to “renounce” all allegiance to “princes, potentates…” Awesome!

Here it is, as posted in the Book of Knowledge:

I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegianceand fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereigntyof whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defendthe Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faithand allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform :noncombatant service in the Armed Forcesof the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work ofnational importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freelywithout any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.
